Applicant Season

Dr. Jenna Geohagan, PGY 2
This time of year makes me reminisce on the excitement and accompanying stress that surrounds trying to figure out which program suits your educational, family, and overall life needs. Therefore, I wanted to highlight three of my favorite aspects of the Great Plains Family Medicine Residency Program, so applicants have a better idea of who we are as a residency program.

Home Where It Belongs...

June 20, 2014 was a very good day...at least for the Great Plains Family Medicine Residents! The OAFP "Quiz Bowl" Trophy is now solidly at our home clinic for the 2014-15 year, thanks to Drs. Vonfeldt, Wright, Landt and Wheeler.

After the blur of a whirlwind of a holiday schedule, GPFM physicians and staff alike reconnect with one another as we resume our work during this first full week of the new year.

Call Specifics

Night Float

Second and third year residents each do one month of night float.  The night float resident is responsible for admissions to the obstetric, adult inpatient, and pediatric services. The resident also answers after-hours phone calls regarding patients at the clinic, nursing home, and inpatient services. The shifts are 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM, Sunday through Thursday. The night float resident then has their clinic on Friday mornings following their final shift of the week. The night float resident is exempt from weekend call while on night float.

As we have 10 upper level residents, two months out of the year are divided q10 (on average) in order to evenly distribute the call schedule.

Intern Call

There are two intern call shifts each week. One intern covers Friday 7:00 PM to Saturday 7:00 AM and Saturday 7:00 PM to Sunday 7:00 AM. This resident rounds on the OB and Newborn services on Saturday and Sunday mornings after their shift, and the Pediatric service on Sunday mornings. A second intern covers Saturday 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Sunday 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. That resident rounds on the adult inpatient service on those days.

Their other responsibilities are similar to the Night Float, except that nursing home calls are handled by the upper level resident. Interns on call work directly with our attending physicians, as well as the many consultants available to the program.

Upper Level Call

There are two upper level call shifts each week. These residents assist and supervise the interns on call, answer nursing home calls, and round on the pediatric service on Saturday mornings. One shift is Friday 7:00 PM to Saturday 7:00 PM. The other is Saturday 7:00 PM to Sunday 7:00 PM. This averages out to about one shift per month for each upper level resident, leaving the other weekends free for time with family and friends or for moonlighting opportunities.

Call Rooms

Comfortable call rooms are provided for both interns and upper levels on call. Each is equipped with an Internet-connected computer, television, mini-fridge, microwave oven, and other amenities.
